Help me, Book Doctor!

book doctor is inFortunately, I don’t prescribe pills in order to make books. At the Book Doctor, we are all about prescribing books in order to cure everything else.

Knowledge is power, after all.

And, given that nearly everyone who comes to my house leaves with a book, it felt like the right thing to open the floodgates to everyone.

We got great feedback on Facebook, even including the highest of praises, “Momma likes” as a response the announcement of this column.

So… the floodgates have been opened.

We started accepting letters, and they started coming in.

We have a lovely letter to start things off this week. Here it is:

Dear Book Doctor,

I’m ready to start the process of making my next career step, but I really don’t know where to start. I do know that I am unhappy in my high-falutin’, semi-well paying, corporate job. I have some inkling of what I’d like to do, but no real surety of my goals ……let alone how to get there. I’m scared about the starting over, scared about the money, but mostly I’d like to make damn sure that my next step is purposeful, and going to make me happy. Save finding a fantastic career coach, can you recommend a book?

Thanks,

Shooting for fancy-free Nancy

Well Nancy,

I am glad you wrote in. This is a very good question, and I will answer it two ways. First, we are pretty well regarded on the career front here at Remabulous, should you decided that you need some handholding and support that way.

Second, I do have a book for you. It is actually very dear to my heart as it was there for me at a critical juncture in my own career and continues to be of use to many of my clients as a referral.

I prescribe for you Creating a Life Worth Living by Carol Lloyd.

creating a life worth living

It’s clear cut, excellent for those looking to leave a corporate situation and also for those nervous about money because it goes over that quite thoroughly in the well-named chapter entitled “The Drudge We Do for Dollars.” There are exercises I come back to again and again in this one, and it’s great for clarifying what you actually want to do next and for being sure that that choice is actually going to serve you.

That is my prescription for you.

Pick it up! And let us how it goes.

xoxo, The Book Doctor
